Looking for a new job in retail? Here are some top tips...

Today, people change jobs on average seven times more in their lifetime, compared to only a couple of decades ago. There are more choices available to us – especially for those with talent, drive and ambition. However, getting your next role can be a challenge particularly if you don’t know where to start. You don’t want to end up with a lack of control over your retail career and a cycle of movement from one unfulfilling retail job to another.

Here are some top tips for making the process of changing jobs a little easier.

1. Invest Your Time

It sounds obvious but getting that new role in retail can be a long process. The more roles you apply for the better your chances. However, its important you apply for the right positions and not just apply for anything and everything. Put in a significant amount of thought, consideration and time into the process in order to maximise your chances. It’s certainly worth registering your CV with job boards such as Reed, CV Library and Retail Choice plus talking to a specialist Retail Recruitment Agency such as C2 Recruitment.

2. Research

Think about what Retail brands you would like to work for. Visit company websites and read their company values and careers page as this will tell you lots about the brand. Also follow company pages on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as again these contain lots of useful information to help you in your search.

3. Action plan

Decide what's important to you and make an action plan. Consider your salary requirements and realistic geographical locations. Be clear about what your plan of action is and how to carry out what you have specifically designed for yourself. Research the retail market carefully to get an idea of who is hiring and what retail brands you may be best suited to. Get clear achievable steps in place and review them regularly.

4. Understand your strengths

Get to know yourself better and identify what your key strengths are. What are you really good at? What do you enjoy? What skills have you learnt? What are you naturally inclined to do and be better at?

5. Be Positive!

Getting your next role can be difficult and you may get rejections. It’s important you stay positive and try to reflect on what you could do differently next time. Look at lots of options within retail and consider roles in similar sectors where your retail experience can be valuable. Leisure and Hospitality is a great example of this, and many job seekers have transferred their skills into this industry.
